conclusions the analysis recommended that ta genes are prevalent in clinical isolates of e. coli strains. the analysis revealed that hipba ta system is associated with biofilm formation. results the results of the analysis revealed that 107 e. coli isolates were potent for biofilm formation by cra. the findings by microtiter plates showed that 102 e. coli isolates were biofilm producers. the results indicated that 80%, 85%, 70%, 91% and 82% of the isolates possessed mazef, relbe, hipba, ccdab and mqsra ta loci, respectively. background toxin-antitoxin (ta) systems are found on the chromosomes and plasmids of many bacteria such as escherichia coli. the roles of ta systems in bacteria are enigmatic. multiple biological functions of ta systems are proposed including growth modulation, persistence, and biofilm formation. biofilms of e. coli are cause of urinary tract infections, as well as bacteraemia. objectives the current study aimed to find the association between biofilm formation and toxin-antitoxin systems in clinical isolates of e. coli. materials and methods a total of 150 e. coli isolates were evaluated for biofilm formation by congo red agar medium (cra) and microtiter plate assay and the presence of different ta systems including mazef, relbe, hipba, ccdab and mqsra.

متن کاملMolecular Detection of Type II Toxin-Antitoxin Systems and their Association with Antibiotic Resistance and Biofilm Formation in Clinical Acinetobacter baumannii Isolates of Burn Patients
Background and purpose: Burn wounds are a good host for infections. Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic bacterium in patients with burn infections. Toxin-antitoxin systems (TAS) are genetic elements that are essential for antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in bacteria, including higBA and relBE TA systems. The present study aimed to investigate the frequency of higBA and relBE...
متن کاملToxin-antitoxin systems influence biofilm and persister cell formation and the general stress response.
In many genomes, toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems have been identified; however, their role in cell physiology has been unclear. Here we examine the evidence that TA systems are involved in biofilm formation and persister cell formation and that these systems may be important regulators of the switch from the planktonic to the biofilm lifestyle as a stress response by their control of secondary mes...
متن کاملToxin-antitoxin systems in Escherichia coli influence biofilm formation through YjgK (TabA) and fimbriae.
The roles of toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems in bacteria have been debated. Here, the role of five TA systems in regard to biofilm development was investigated (listed as toxin/antitoxin: MazF/MazE, RelE/RelB, ChpB, YoeB/YefM, and YafQ/DinJ). Although these multiple TA systems were reported previously to not impact bacterial fitness, we found that deletion of the five TA systems decreased biofilm ...
متن کاملToxin–antitoxin systems
Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are small genetic elements composed of a toxin gene and its cognate antitoxin. The toxins of all known TA systems are proteins while the antitoxins are either proteins or non-coding RNAs. Based on the molecular nature of the antitoxin and its mode of interaction with the toxin the TA modules are currently grouped into five classes. In general, the toxin is more stab...
متن کاملBacterial toxin-antitoxin systems
Toxin-antitoxin (TA) systems are composed of two elements: a toxic protein and an antitoxin which is either an RNA (type I and III) or a protein (type II). Type II systems are abundant in bacterial genomes in which they move via horizontal gene transfer. They are generally composed of two genes organized in an operon, encoding a toxin and a labile antitoxin. When carried by mobile genetic eleme...
